We are gradually progressing with the completion of two rooms in the supported living house in Shcherbynivka in the Cherkasy region.
In Ukraine, there is a very high demand for places for comfortable living for people with intellectual disabilities. Many neuropsychiatric institutions in the south and east of the country are occupied or destroyed. Others, despite the course toward deinstitutionalization, are overcrowded: rooms designed for 3 people often house 5–7 individuals.
Children with developmental disabilities are growing up in foster families and family-type children's homes, and in adulthood they will often need supported living — sometimes temporarily, and sometimes for life.
In Shcherbynivka, the “Helpus” foundation is creating a small supported living house.
From the outside, it is a very simple house. But the difference compared to institutions is enormous.
Here, everyone has their own room, new furniture, and modern bathrooms. There is a generator, backup power supply, and internet. Nearby there is a garden, flower beds, and a small vegetable plot.
Residents cook their own meals, take care of the territory, use household appliances, and go shopping. They live among ordinary people, not behind the fence of an institution. A social worker only assists with budgeting, shopping, and medical issues.
And all of this is being created almost without government support — thanks to caring people.
Now we are completing a kitchen-living room and another bedroom so that 2–3 more people with disabilities can live in the house.
The roof is almost finished.
The next step is to install two energy-efficient windows.
We need to raise 21,000 UAH. (аlmost 500 US dollars)
